The 27th China Overseas Talent Exchange Conference and the 25th Guangzhou Science and Technology Exchange Conference for China Overseas Students in SELF· Bay Area, hosted by Guangzhou Science and Technology Bureau, Guangzhou Internet of Things Research Institute, and supported by Guangzhou Liwan District Education Bureau and Guangzhou Liwan District Science and Technology Association, were held in Guangzhou Zhenguang Middle School on the afternoon of December 19th, 2023. Six marine experts from various areas were invited to share their knowledge with nearly 600 students on-site and nearly 400,000 online visitors.

"Haima" is China's first 4500m-class deep-sea remote-controlled unmanned submersible (ROV), which has achieved zero breakthrough in China's independent research and development of deep-sea unmanned remote-controlled submersible. Chen Zongheng, a senior engineer at the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey, was involved in the development of the "Haima" project. Haima discovered China's first giant active cold spring on the seabed after six years of research and development, followed by the success of China's first ROV carrying a deep-sea core sampling rig and the first acoustic thickness measurement of cobalt-rich crusts in China, achieving the maximum depth of submarine equipment salvage (4,300 metres) and the maximum weight of ROV independent deep-sea salvage (5 tonnes).
After 20 years of work, researcher Sheng Songwei of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Guangzhou Institute of Energy and his team have developed a semi-submersible eagle wave energy device that enables development from nearshore to offshore, from 10KW to 1,000 kW, and from pulse power generation to relatively stable grid connection. The wave energy conversion technology is world-leading. They also created the world's first semi-submersible wave power generation aquaculture platform and constructed a marine pasture that combined power generation, aquaculture, tourism, fresh water production, and other functions.
Guan Yuping, a researcher at the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, and his colleagues discovered that by 2100, the northern hemisphere summer may last more than six months, while the winter may last less than one month. They made the data of the next four seasons into a rotating round table, inspired by 24 solar terms and clocks, to show the changes of the four seasons under global warming more intuitively. Many scholars have conducted extensive scientific research to investigate the chain reaction caused by the change of four seasons, such as the decrease in grain production and the lengthening of the flu season...
Since 2016, Huang Honghui, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences' Nanhai Fisheries Research Institute, and his team have conducted a comprehensive scientific investigation on Daya Bay Nature Reserve, adjusted and optimised the reserve's functional zoning, compiled the reserve's master plan, and approved its implementation. They chose the ecological restoration of Sargassum field as the research goal, developing artificial breeding technology of Sargassum, restoring and reconstructing the habitat of Sargassum field, restoring the coastline of Sargassum field by 1,500 metres, and rebuilding the Sargassum field by more than 8,500 square metres.
According to Zhan Changfa, a researcher at the Guangdong Laboratory of Southern Ocean Science and Engineering (Zhuhai), China's marine cultural heritage is heavily reliant on the South China Sea. There are thousands of sunken ships in the South China Sea, and at the moment, more than 80 have been proven, with only 10 successfully salvaged through systematic underwater archaeological work. The Southern Ocean Laboratory, where Zhan Changfa is located, has gone from passive to active, exploring the application of modern marine intelligent equipment and improving the survey technology system on a continuous basis. Eleven shipwrecks have been discovered in the Greater Bay Area in the last three years. They compiled reports on ancient routes and shipwrecks and uploaded them to the information management platform to enable cloud exhibition and data sharing.
Yue Hongjun, vice chairman of the Shenzhen Photographers Association, has been photographing underwater landscapes for nearly ten years and has dived over 700 times. Yue Hongjun's photographic works have frequently won international and domestic awards over the years, including the gold medal in the Olympic Games for Rong. After many years of filming, he discovered that many sea creatures had decreased or even disappeared. Because marine creatures cannot speak, they communicate through images. He has shot many works that feature marine animals making sounds, such as Begging Whale Shark and Snow on the Sea...
This activity is hosted by Qiu Qiang, a researcher from the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology. During the round-table discussion, he and the guests got into a heated debate about topics like "the sustainable development of the marine economy in Dawan District" and "how to promote the integrated development of the marine industry in the Greater Bay Area."
Simultaneously, a round-table discussion and interactive question-and-answer session were held on the spot, and scientists debated "How to Develop the Marine Economy in Dawan District Sustainably" and "How to Promote the Integrated Development of the Marine Industry in Greater Bay Area." Simultaneously, on-site students had interactive questions and answers with scientists on their own questions, and the activity's atmosphere reached a climax.
